Vegetarian TVP Burgers

I usually make my vegetarian burgers with kidney beans, and make them really spicy, but from time to time I make TVP burgers.  The spices I add depend on my mood, and you can add anything that you like.

I served these vegetarian burgers with Carolina Style Barbecue Sauce.  Terrible photograph, but hunger prevailed…

Vegetarian TVP Burger

  • 1 cup Textured Vegetable Protein
  • 1 tsp. Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp. Sage
  • 1 tsp. Curry powder
  • 1/2 tsp. Coriander
  • 1/4 tsp. Pepper
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Mix together the TVP and spices in a large bowl until they are evenly mixed.
Pour 1 cup of boiling water over the mixture and let the mixture stand for five minutes, or until all the water absorbs into the mixture.
Add the eggs and the flour to the mixture and stir with a wooden spoon.
Roll and press the mixture into patties with your hands, similar to how you would make cookies. The mixture should yield approximately 6 good sized patties.Chill on wax paper in the fridge until set in shape.
Pour 1 tbsp. of vegetable oil into a frying pan set on medium heat.
Brown the patties on each side, turning them over with a spatula, then serve.
