Slow Cooker Barbeque Ribs
Today is Mother’s Day in Canada, which isn’t Mother’s Day for my Mom, as she is in the UK with all of my family, but I reckon she deserves two Mother’s Days. She raised three of us without killing a single one. Though I am sure at times she was sorely tempted.
I have my Mom to thank for my love of cooking and baking. She is a baking machine, she never makes one apple pie, she makes a dozen. At Christmas she makes and ices over twelve cakes to give out to family and friends. Until I left I took over the Christmas pudding duties but she now has them again, too. That or she hits Marks and Spencers. I must ask her about that.
I remember the very first Mother’s Day breakfast my sister and I made for her. We were so proud. Tea and toast with jam.
We were very young, I was maybe six and my sister five.
My mom seemed so impressed, and we were certain the expression on her face as she tasted the tea was one of sheer delight at our culinary genius.
And all without anyone ever showing us how to make tea!!
It was obviously in our genes, those Cordon Bleu classes Mom had been taking at the local college had obviously miraculously, maybe by osmosis, made their ways into us as well!
Turns out, not so much.
It seems that running the hot tap and filling up the left over teapot from the night before, which for once in her life Mom hadn’t cleaned out before going to bed, isn’t the ideal way to make tea.
In fact, from what Mom has since shared it is downright disgusting…
But the thought was there and hero that she was she choked a cup down. Hey, she made us take a huge spoonful of cod liver oil every morning for years, and not the orange flavoured stuff, the real deal. Maybe that was her revenge…
Since that tea making debacle I like to think I have learnt a few things about cooking.
Plus, I make a killer cup of tea. And not killer in the way that first one might have been…
Allan loves ribs. And I love my slow cooker. So this recipe is perfect for us both. Sometimes I don’t bother with browning the ribs in the oven first. But today I did. The browning just adds an extra dimension to the flavour.
I served them with red potato wedges. Always a winner!
Also some big news, we were going to be moving at the end of June, but last evening Allan told me we are moving on Thursday. I spent the day packing and have about half of it done, but there are a lot of things I can’t pack until the last minute. We are taking some things out to the airport to have them flown out before we leave as we are only allowed a very limited amount of cargo and they count my Bob as cargo!!
He is our full allowance all by himself. We had to book a seat for him on the plane, though he won’t be allowed in the cabin unfortunately.
So, for the next couple of weeks I will be posting random things, as not much real cooking will be going on.
Take care!
Slow Cooker Ribs
• 4 pounds pork baby back ribs
• salt and pepper to taste
• 2 cups ketchup
• 1 cup chili sauce
• 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
• 4 tablespoons vinegar
• 2 teaspoons dried oregano
• 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
• 1 dash hot sauce
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
Season ribs with salt and pepper. Place in a shallow baking pan. Brown in oven 15 minutes. Turn over, and brown another 15 minutes; drain fat.
In a medium bowl, mix together the ketchup, chili sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, oregano, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and salt and pepper.
Place ribs in slow cooker. Pour sauce over ribs, and turn to coat.
Cover, and cook on Low 6 to 8 hours, or until ribs are tender.
Yum, yum, yum! Great post! I love ribs!
Thank you. 🙂
Four (or is it five) days’ notice when you had planned on being there for another 6 weeks would have me pulling my hair out after giving a good scream and you’re blogging about ribs! Wow, I’m impressed with your strength.
My mom’s favourite ribs are drier and not very sweet (though they are tender enough to fall off the bone) so that’s the way I make them though I don’t mind a bit of sweet heat in mine. Kudos again.
Thank you. I am delighted about the move. It has been truly hellish here and enough is enough. I am about 3/4 packed and we are starting to take stuff to the airport tomorrow, the planes are tiny and we would never get our luggage on with us. Bob is not happy. He hates all this change, but it will be the best thing for all of us!! 🙂
Dry ribs are good. Would you mind sharing?
“Dry ribs are good. Would you mind sharing?”
Not really a recipe. I used to boil them first but I figured that I was just throwing away the flavour in the water so now I do it this way.
I put seasoned ribs (using whatever dry spice rub I am inspired by) on a roasting rack with a bit of water underneath and cover the roasting pan tightly with aluminum foil and then bake it at 325 deg F for an hour or so. The low heat and steam tenderizes the ribs and lets the excess fat melt and fall into the water so it doesn’t burn. Then I uncover the dish and bake the ribs for another 15 minutes or so to let the outside of the ribs crisp up a bit. I can baste them with my favourite bbq sauce at this point or wait and pour it on when I’ve served it.
Thank you! It sounds great. 🙂
Wow, congrats on the move, but talk about short notice. And such a nice tribute to your mom. I remember some things I made as a kid…. oy vey. Nice looking ribs!
Thank you! I am so happy about the move. And my poor Mom suffered a lot. As did my Dad, school home ec always resulted in some culinary delight he had to eat as my Mom was smart and said there wasn’t enough for two so he should be allowed the honour. Bearing in mind I made it in the morning in school and brought it home and my Dad always worked late it was well congealed by the time he got to “enjoy” it. I think the cold fish was the best…
These look wonderful – perfect for me to try out in the Land of Pork. Not much else on offer here in rural Spain, so always enjoy a new pork recipe. Good luck with the move (where to? Sorry am new to your blog). Hope Bob makes the journey ok, my two pups have never flown, but imagine it might be a little stressful for him, poor pup.
He flew here okay, we are in a fly in community which means that there is no way in or out unless by plane. We are flying the shortest possible distance and driving the rest. He will be okay in the plane as he will be in his kennel and I will tranquilise him, my vet gave me a pill which will sedate him to sleepiness but not knock him out. He will be with me right up until five minutes before take off and then I will get him within ten minutes of landing. It is a small airport we are going to so it will all be very fast. He will be okay, better than me, as I worry about him constantly during the flight. We booked him a seat but he isn’t allowed into the cabin.
We are moving across Canada, going through the US as it is quicker, to Southern Ontario. It will be my first time living in regular Canada so I have a lot to learn!
I hope you have somewhere nice to live when you get there and a possible job to look forward to so you can do some more great cooking and blogging. Best wishes…
Thanks, actually we have no idea of what is ahead bar a city destination. We have to look for somewhere to live and jobs when we get there! But things here are too hard now, so we have to leave. Allan is worried about me, so wants to get me out. It’s all good, 🙂
Wonderful tribute to your mom Alison :). My mom is reading this post with me and we both love our Slow Cookers like you do. Wonderful rib recipe :). And congrats on the movie girl 🙂
Thank you. 🙂 Happy Mother’s Day to your Mom.
I love the story of you and your sister making your mom breakfast. I’m sure she loved it. Homemade gifts – food, cards, little flower pots – are among my favorite gifts! Congrats on the move and good luck! What a wild ride…here’s to getting settled again!
Thanks. I am looking forward to getting settled. Though it will be a month or more of chaos until we find a place. All good though.
Just get through the next few days and everyone will be happy again. Bob will be ok he has a good mama and dad who love him. I miss my Madison very much and enjoy when others talk about their fur babies. Just can’t bring myself to get another doggie. Nice looking ribs. You have a great trip and look to the other end where you can shop and get what you want at the market. Andi
Thanks! It will all be good and worth the chaos of the moment. Poor Bob is upset at the changes but he is getting lots of love and treats.
Good luck with your move. I love the spices you mixed for this recipe. This is going to be one for my todo list 🙂
Thank you so much. We are happy about the move, but it is so chaotic here at the moment with bags everywhere! 🙂 I hope you enjoy the ribs.
